The Most Ingenious Dog Costumes
Some people might say it is demented to actually put a costume on a dog, but these are some pretty ingenious outfits. Each year my wife and I dress up our dog, Porthos, in a costume. He's a white dalmatian-lab mix and we've had him play Snoopy, a gangsta, and a goblin-rider from Lord of the Rings. The costumes below are really good and some of them are easy to make to keep your dog warm and fashionable this Halloween. Which ones are your favorites?
THE HEADLESS DOGMAN
This is a parody on the Headless Horseman, from "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" told by Washington Irving. He was one of early America's most famous writers. It tells the tale of a school teacher, named Ichabod Crane, who is run out of town by what appears to be a headless ghost. IN reality, it was just the town bully who didn't like Crane hanging around his love interest. The costume is a simple saddle-like attachment that Velcro's to your dog. The headless, pumpkin carrier just moves along for the ride. Amazing!
CERBERUS
In Greek mythology, Cerberus was the three-headed dog that guarded the entrance to Hades. His job was to ensure that none of the dead would ever try to escape the Underworld. The dog is introduced to us as the final and 12th Labor of Hercules. It was his job to capture the dog without the use of any weapons. This dog costume is also a harness design, with the two fake heads attached on either side of the real dog.
THE PUPPY PIRATES
These puppy pirates offer a good illusion. It's one dog that looks like two pirates carrying a chest! I love the extra details of the hook on the lead pirate's "arm". The dog costume is great, but I bet it is a little bit too warm for the dog and it doesn't look like there is any access for our furry friend to go do his business.
AT-AT ATTACK FROM STAR WARS
There was a commercial with a similar dog in it this past Super Bowl. Someone took it literally and created their own AT-AT Walker from cardboard. It works best with a tall dog with long legs, such as a greyhound.
THE DREADED SHELOB
I saw this one on the internet today. The dog has coloring the same as the costume, which makes it look perfect. The spider costume looks like a harness, so it would keep your dog free to move and do his business. This is, by far, one of the best dog costumes I've seen.
