The Five Most Annoying Things Found On Web Sites

Do you ever find yourself surfing the web and you come across one of those web sites that make you cringe? You know the ones that make you leave the site immediately! So many web owners just don’t get that we don’t want to be immediately jumped by “web salesmen” the minute we sign onto their web sites. Here are five of the most annoying things that can be found on web sites.

Audio or Video That Automatically Starts
I don’t care what it is, but if it makes sound, I leave your web site. If I am at home surfing the web and I have my headphones on, I don’t want to hear your video over my iTunes. What’s worse is if I am at the Library or in a coffee shop and your video interrupts the ambiance of the surroundings. Think about it. If the person accessing your web site is at work and you start selling them your product, guess what? It’s a guarantee that they ARE NOT going to buy from you – especially if you get them in trouble. Don’t do this.

Roll Over Ads and Mouse Overs
These are the bane of the internet. If I am interested in your ad, I’ll click on it. I don’t want it popping up over top of what I am reading. I don’t have time for such nonsense. Let me carry on with my day. You interrupting me with a Viagra ad isn’t going to make me stop and say, “Wow! I didn’t know these existed. I must buy them now!” More likely, I’ll click the “X” in the corner – and I am not talking about the one on the ad…

OK, I am going to say it. “I HATE FLASH“. This also includes the Silverlight that is new through Microsoft that is just a copycat of this animation program. You know why Steve Jobs doesn’t create products that allow Flash? Because it sucks! Flash takes up way too much bandwidth, it is slow on your computer and people have a tendency to over use it on their web sites. A little Flash is good. A web site made completely of Flash is a waste of money and your web site is annoying. Flash needs to be left for Facebook games and videos.

Requiring Me To Do Anything But Look At Your Site
Any web site that tries to make me fill out a form to subscribe to something (without first letting me look through the site), resizes my browser window, or does anything that requires me to do more than read and “ooh and ahh” at your pictures is going to make me leave your site pretty quickly, too. I don’t want to register. I want to browse. Registering for your site requires me to click on the “Unsubscribe” button at a later date and I am not going to buy anything from you, anyway, since you highjacked my computer to find out info about me.

It Takes Forever To Load
I have a Cable modem and if I am sitting at your site for more than ten seconds without something popping up on my computer screen, I am gone. No one needs a billboard on their front page. This also includes Flash. There are at least a dozen other web sites on the internet with the same content you are trying to let me see and I don’t have the patience to wait around till next season when your web site finally loads. Sorry, it is annoying. Fix your web site and I’ll be back.

I hope this helps people understand why these factors can be annoying. If you are a web site owner, get them fixed. Your customers don’t have to be subjected to these annoyances while they are trying to search for information – or worse – buy something from you.
