As followers of this blog probably already know, I am a Vegan. I don’t eat any animal products, nor do I have any oil in my diet. I don’t do this because I am overly sensitive to small, furry creatures, but rather for my health. I was recently shocked to find out that some of our favorite foods do not comply with my eating choices. Eleven weeks ago, I went cold faux-turkey and started a totally vegan, no oil diet. I personally did this for health reasons because I was on a collision course with death and I am not quite ready to go there yet. The main goal of this dietary change was to get healthy, but the added benefit is that I’ve lost 80 pounds in those 11 weeks!  In this time, I’ve had the opportunity to talk to dozens of people who have been interested in the diet, but have made excuses on why NOT eating a plant based diet. Believe me, I did this, too, until I had the proper motivation. Here are some of my favorite excuses and how I’ve overcome them.

[ReviewAZON name=”esselstyn” id=”100″ display=”inlinepost” asin=”1583333002″ trackingid=”mywebsource1-20″ country=”us” width=”200px” float=”left” imagetop=”10px”]Have you seen the movie-documentary Forks Over Knives?  It is about living on a Vegan diet and becoming heart-healthy.  Two months ago, I started a similar, very strict vegan diet. I am following the Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn diet where you cut out all animal products and oils. This means that you are allowed to have only plant-based foods that don’t contain oil. Zero fat. You would think that this may be one of the items on this list, but it isn’t. The food intake part of the diet is pretty easy, but there are other pitfalls that I’ve come across from being a vegan. Most of them are regarding other people. While the diet works great, putting up with others is often the challenging part…Here are the five hardest things about being a vegan.

Vegetarian GrillEverybody I know loves to grill out each summer.  The smell of the charcoal or wood burning and smoking the food brings back some fond memories of when I was young.  However, I am now a vegetarian (since January 1, 2010) and finding foods to put on the grill can be difficult.  Sure, you can throw some vegetables on the fire or maybe a boca burger, but it just isn’t the same when everyone else is eating chicken or hot dogs.  So, I started searching for new foods to eat that showed some ingenuity, yet were still easy to make.  Here’s a list of five of those items.  I would never have thought to grill these, but they sure are tasty! Five Reasons For Being A Vegetarian

vegetarianI never thought I’d be saying this, but my New Year’s Resolution this year was to become a vegetarian.  I loved being a carnivore – beef, chicken, turkey, pork, buffalo, whatever…but then I had a heart attack and started noticing some things.  Every doctor I knew was a vegetarian. Maybe there was something to this.  Well, I did some research and here are the reasons I decided to switch sides of the food pyramid. Read more…
