This week, Texas decided to take away a prisoner's last meal after convicted murderer Lawrence Russell Brewer ordered a large dinner as his last meal and then refused to eat it. Lawmakers said "enough is enough" and have cancelled this tradition from the Texas death row. Do you think this is right? Should prisoners sentenced to death be given a last meal? Almost all societies, all the way back to ancient Greece and Rome, offer their prisoners a last meal. In Middle Age Europe, the last meal was thought of as a peace offering from the judge, jury, and executioner to the condemned person. By giving them one last meal, they felt that the ghost of the person would not haunt them. Additionally, a large last meal (combined with lots of alcohol) often calms the condemned person's nerves before being executed - which, in turn, makes it easier for justice to be carried out.
