Five Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Monopoly

Monopoly factsThe game of Monopoly is a board game named after the economic concept of monopoly, the domination of a market by a single entity.  Monopoly is a redesign of an earlier game "The Landlord's Game", first published in 1903 by the Quaker and political activist Elizabeth Magie. The purpose of that game was to teach people how monopolies end up bankrupting the many and giving extraordinary wealth to one or few individuals.  Since the game was created, more than one billion people have played it. In 1933, a man by the name of Charles Darrow developed the game as we know it today with actual spaces from Atlantic City, New Jersey.  In 1935, Parker Brothers bought the rights from Darrow and started manufacturing a slightly updated version.  In the same year, John Waddington bought the UK rights to the game and made a version based on the streets of London.  It was later used by British POWs during World War 2 with items included that could be used in escaping the prison camps.  The game has a rich history and here are five things you probably don't know about it.
