My 5 Best ways to go Green…at home

“Going Green” has quickly become one of the hottest trends. There are actually some very successful companies working to help other companies become environmentally friendly. Due to the growing concern over Global Warming, we as individuals need to take steps to “Go Green” and reduce our carbon footprint.

1: Buy Hybrid
Hybrid cars have been around since the 1800’s, believe it or not.  However, the type of vehicle you would be most familiar with started appearing around 1900 with a Belgian gas/electric hybrid.  It is truly amazing how we haven’t been using these vehicles longer.  They give off less emmisions, keep our fossil fuel usage down, and is just plain better for the environment.

2: Stop Buying Bottled Water
Bottled water has become very taxing to our environment. Landfills are quickly becoming consumed with empty plastic water bottles. Try re-using the plastic bottles or don’t use them at all. There are a lot of filtration devices available so it’s really no longer necessary to buy bottled water.

3: Reduce Personal Travel
Walk and ride a bike as often as possible. Not only does it save on fuel cost, but it’s healthy and a great way to stay in shape.

4: Reduce Business Travel
Technology now provides a wide range of tools to communicate via phone and computer, so now meetings can just as easily be conducted thousands of miles away. Cisco Systems offers a great video tele-conferencing tool. There are also several different web conferencing tools available that are very inexpensive to use – GoToMeeting, WebEx and my personal favorite – DimDim (it’s free).

5: Turn Off Lights & Water
It drives me insane when I see the lights on in a room with nobody around. Or, the water left running in a sink that has not been turned off. How difficult is it to flick a light switch or turn off the water?? Also, when you’re in the shower, turn the off water when applying shampoo and conditioner. Turning off lights and limiting your water usage not only reduces our carbon footprint, it will also save you money.
