This Friday, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens up in theaters everywhere. I wonder how it holds true with real pirates. I am not talking about the magical aspects of the movie, but how close they get to the historical bad guys. Pirates were the scourge of the seas. They attacked merchant ships without mercy to steal their treasures and goods. Sometimes they were hired by a nation to attack only enemy ships. Others freelanced on their own. The tools of their trade varied. They fought with what they had on hand. These men weren't trained naval warriors. The fourth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean comes out on May 20th and it got me to thinking about pirates and all of the things we think we know about them. The problem is that most of the things we know about them is false.
