The Statehood Quiz: New Jersey
New Jersey was the third state admitted into the Union on December 18, 1787 - six days after Pennsylvania became the second state. Originally called the Province of New Jersey, it was under British rule since the surrender of Fort Amsterdam in 1664, when the Dutch lost it. Bordered by New York City and Philadelphia, New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the United States. The area was inhabited by Native Americans for more than 2,800 years, with historical tribes such as the Lenape along the coast. In the early 17th century, the Dutch and the Swedes made the first European settlements. It was named after the largest of the British Channel Islands, Jersey, where one of its early English governors was born.
