Review of Five Online Tax Software Programs
With Tax Season right around the corner, many people will choose to move online to do their yearly chore. However, there are dozens of programs to choose from and what is the best tax software to choose from. Here are five of the best programs that we have seen to use. Note: None of these companies has endorsed us to promote their products.
Turbo Tax Deluxe
Not only do they spend the most money advertising their product, they actually have one of the best products out there. This program can handle all sorts of filing needs. If you own a home, have large medical expenses, or are on student loans, this program is more than adequate. There are other Turbo Tax programs if you have specific needs, like a small business. Turbo Tax will also load last year’s tax information, look for tax credits, and will track your audit risk. The program starts at $29.95 for the Federal Taxes and $36.95 for state returns. You can save money by downloading the information from online.
H&R Block At Home Deluxe
Not only is H&R Block one of the nation’s largest tax preparation companies, they also offer a program to do your returns. This tax software is very easy to use and the questions are right to the point. One feature that is unique to H&R Block tax software is that they offer a free session with a tax professional. With this software, you can cover all of your basic needs, the sales of stocks and bonds, maximize your deductions, and have the peace of mind, knowing that H&R Block stands behind you. The cost is only $25.46 for the federal software and an additional $29.95 for the state return.
Complete Tax
This tax software is very detailed when it comes to completing your taxes. It is one of the best programs available if you want to file your taxes electronically. The look is simple enough with a questionnaire. The software is completely hosted online, so there isn’t anything to install on your computer. To set up an account with Complete Tax is pretty simple. Create a username and password and you are ready to start filling out their questions. They offer a safety net to help you avoid problems and mistakes in your taxes as you are filling them out. This is done as you are doing the taxes, not after it is all finished. Since the software is an online application, you aren’t restricted to using your own computer. You can go anywhere and obtain the information. The cost for this service starts at just $29.95 for the federal taxes.
TaxAct Ultimate
This economical tax software won’t make you spend all of your refund on the price. It includes both federal and state returns for only $17.95 when you choose the online application. If you would prefer the CD/Download, the cost goes up to $19.95. The questionnaire that TaxAct takes you through is very straightforward and easy to comprehend for even the most novice tax filer. There are plenty of links and videos to hold your hand throughout the process. The software backs up their calculations by guaranteeing your penalties and interest if there is a calculation error.
OnePrice Taxes
If you find that working on your returns is daunting, then you are going to love OnePrice Taxes. They’ve taken your tax returns and made the process simple. As you advance through the different steps, the program automatically saves and you can jump from page to page with the online navigation. Like other tax software, you can choose between an online application or a downloadable program. If the program wasn’t simple enough, there are “Explain This” links throughout the process to help you finish your taxes. You can also bounce around while you do the returns so you aren’t stuck on one part without being able to go on to the next. This program is designed for you to use if your taxes are straightforward. Cost is: $14.95.

In the past I’ve used H&R Block and TaxAct and have never paid to file my Federal return — and my state I can do directly online.
