If you are a fan of Facebook Flash games and want to try something different than the typical Mafia Wars or Farmville, think about going medieval! Realm of Empires is a Flash based game in the time of the Middle Ages. You can join clans, build your medieval town and attack your neighbors as you grow your lands and power. The game isn’t your typical fare for Facebook, though. You certainly can lose this game – which is not the norm in a world where everyone gets a trophy – but you will have fun! Here are five tips for succeeding at Realm of Empires!

Starting Out
Don’t worry about building your armies, at first. Realm of Empires gives you a grace period where you cannot be attacked, so you can concentrate on getting your city started. It is essential, if you are new to the game to go through the tutorial. There will be mini-quests for you to accomplish. Try not to skip these. You get credit for completing each one and why throw away free experience? Another thing you should start doing is looking around at your neighbors. You will notice some towns have gray shields next to them. These will either be a rebel village or an abandoned village. These towns become abandoned by people who start the game and then don’t log in for a number of days. Keep track of the size of these villages. They will come in handy later.
Buildings to Work On
Each building works for you in a different way, so you will want to pay attention to what you need. The buildings start out at a low cost and then continue to increase in silver and food consumption. You will find that the game puts you ahead in levels with your silver mine and farmland. You will need this to grow from the start. Later on, when you conquer an area, you will not be given this level advantage and will have to start from scratch. Rebel villages will have some improvements.
Below are a list of all of the buildings in Realm of Empires:
- Headquarters: Speeds up production. Requires level 20 to build a palace.
- Silver Mine: This increases the amount of silver that you bring into your city. Remember, you can only hold as much silver as your Treasury will allow!
- Barracks: This is where you recruit foot soldiers, such as Citizen Militia and Infantry. You also need to increase this level to five before you can build a Stable and level ten to build a Siege Workshop.
- Tavern: The location that you use to recruit and gather spies. Use spies to find out your enemies strengths and get an idea of how many troops you will need to attack.
- Trading Post: This building allows you to transfer silver between villages. The higher the level, the more silver you can send.
- Farm Land: Allows you to support your troops and buildings. You need more food the more your buildings level and as you increase your troops.
- Palace: This is the building you need to eventually strive to create. It allows for you to get governors who can then take over more villages. You need a Headquarters of level 20, a fifth level Wall, twentieth level Stable and a fifteenth level Trading Post to build your Palace.
- Wall: The Wall helps to protect your village from attacks. Only battering rams will tear down your walls. Your Walls start out as wooden palisades and eventually become made out of stone.
- Defensive Towers: These help to defend your town. They consist of your gate house and perimeter defense. Only trebuchet’s can tear down the Defensive Towers. These also start out made of wood and eventually become stone.
- Treasury: This is the location where the silver is stored. The higher the level, the more silver you can store.
Going on the Offensive
As your no-attack grace period is coming to an end, it is time to start building your armies. You should concentrate mainly on your Infantry. The Infantry is more effective than your Citizen Militia and you can still get a decent amount of troops started. Next work on building your Light Cavalry and then, finally, your Knights. You will also want to build about ten Spies. Once all of this is done, you are ready to start attacking abandoned villages. The starting number level of a village is 128. You will want to look at attacking these villages first. The best method of attack is doing the following:
- Ensure that the village you are looking at is either abandoned or a rebel village. You can do this by sending a message to the village. If there is no response, you should be ok with doing the next step.
- Send in your ten spies. You will most likely lose a couple, but after, you will know how many troops your target has.
- Run the battle simulator to see the troops you are likely to lose. If it looks like the battle will be in your favor – attack!
- The more troops you send, the more silver they will bring back. This is how you will get more silver to supplement what your silver mine is producing.
Expanding Your Land
You need a palace and a governor to take over your first village. First, make sure that you have cleared out all of the enemy combatants within the town. You should have already been attacking the village over and over to build up silver. It is best to attack Rebel villages because they already have improvements build, but you can take any village that is depleted of the enemy. You will not take over the village on the first attack. It sometimes takes four or five tries –each time with a governor joining in the fight – to lower the approval of the Council of Elders. For this reason, you may want to have more than one governor and split your forces. Once you have done this, the village will be yours and you can start the building process all over again!
Fighting The Good Fight
You should continue to build your empire by taking Rebel and abandoned villages. You want to make sure you have enough troops to maintain all of those villages. Spreading yourself out too thin can be bad if you come under attack. Attacks can occur if you start moving into other people’s territory. When you go to attack a new village, continue to use your spies to find out if anyone has already attacked them. You will find that newer villages will build up much quicker than your first. Use your larger villages to transfer silver to the rest. Before you know it, you will have a vast empire at your fingertips!
