Mid-Season NFL Awards

peytonmanningHalf of the NFL’s 09-10 season is in the books and it has been great. What I like best is that every team has won at least 1 game. I always hate to see somebody go winless. We have also had the pleasure to see some great individual efforts and here is a look at some award winners if the season were to end today.

number1  MVP- When me and the myfivebest.com panel (Jess Stiver) were discussing who our MVP of the league should be, it came down to Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Brett Favre. All three of these guys have arguments backing them being the MVP thus far, but we had to go with Peyton Manning. Manning has the Indianapolis Colts sitting at 8-0 and they have been hit by the injury bug big time. The other two guys do not mean more to their team than Manning does to his, in fact nobody does.

number2  Offensive Player of the Year - Since Manning got MVP we will give Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints this award. Brees is extremly hot right now and has his team sitting at 8-0. Brees is hitting 68% of his passes and has tossed 17 touchdowns to lead the NFL. The Saints will go where Brees takes them.

number3  Defensive Player of the Year - This award goes hands down to Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings. Allen leads the league with 10.5 sacks. Opposing QB’s cannot get away from this beast. He also has 3 forced fumbles and 2 fumble returns, one of which he took to the house. Jared Allen has also forced a safety, so let’s just say he has been in on a lot of huge plays for the Vikings defense.

number4  Offensive Rookie of the Year - Percy Harvin of the Minnesota Vikings is the choice here. Harvin is a threat every time he touches the ball. He will grow to be one of the most electrifying players in the NFL. His kick return ability is huge alongside his above average receiving capabilities that should soon blossom into great receiving capabilities.

number5  Defensive Rookie of the Year - Jarius Byrd of the Buffalo Bills gets the award. It is hard enough to get 7 interceptions as a veteran through a 16 game season, but Byrd is tied for the league lead with 7 ints through 8 games. This rookie is either very, very talented or has been in the right place at the right time 7 different times. I’ll go with the talent.
