sesamestreetIn case you haven’t heard, Sesame Street turned 40 today. That’s right 40 years of Big Bird and all the other characters from the hit T.V. show. Jim Henson would be proud. I remember watching Sesame Street for hours when I was a kid. I’m not so sure how much Sesame Street kids watch today but I’m sure it is not enough. To me, kids should be watching a lot more Sesame Street than the other popular shows. That being said, here is a look at five characters that really keep this show going.

number1  Elmo – All the kids love Elmo. Elmo is everywhere. Elmo even endorsed President Barack Obama. When I was little I really wasn’t that much in to Elmo but all the other kids were. I think Elmo became the most popular character on the show after the Tickle-Me-Elmo craze. Those toys were the hottest things out at the time. Now you see Elmo’s face everywhere, and I don’t think it will go away anytime soon.

number2  Big Bird - Elmo might be one of the favorites but Big Bird is the face of Sesame Street. It’s hard for him not to be the face of Sesame Street because when you think of Sesame Street, it’s hard not to think of the 8 foot 2 inch bright yellow bird. Big Bird is best known for being innocent and naive. The one thing that Big Bird has on all the other characters is that he has his own star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

number3  Cookie Monster - The cookie monster was actually used as a scare tactic by my parents to keep me away from the cookie jar when I was a kid. They would tell me that the Cookie Monster would get my hand if I reached in there. I always envisioned the monster they were talking about as the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street. All in all the Cookie Monster is pretty cool in my book now because he appeared on the Colbert Report in 2008. By the way, what do they put in his cookies? As Dave Chappelle put it “Cookies don’t make you act like that.”

number4  Oscar the Grouch - Oscar helps teach children about respect and tolerance and also shows them that they should give everybody a chance, no matter their lifestyle. Oscar was my favorite character when I was growing up because I thought he was funny, I guess I was a grouch all the time and could relate. Every kid everywhere knows that Oscar won’t be mean to them because young children are the only kids that he can be nice too without being heckled by other grouches. *Little known fact* Did you know that Oscar was orange during the first season of Sesame Street? Well, now you do.

number5  Bert and Ernie - I had to include these two guys together because they are a package deal. These two always made me laugh when I was younger. Ernie being the trouble maker and Bert always ruining it for Ernie was always great. Also the way Ernie would always beg and beg for Bert to play a game with him only to turn around and be bored of it in two seconds was hilarious. Rumors of them meant to be homosexuals should not be taken seriously, besides Bert is always hitting on women.

These characters from Sesame St. are just a few of the main characters of the show. I could go on and on about the different characters but these five really stuck out to me when I was a kid. But let’s not forget Count von Count, Grover, Snuffleupagus, Zoey, and many more.
