Five Surprises at the NFL’s Halfway Mark

dumervilAfter tonight the 09-10 NFL season will be halfway over for all teams. This season has been great so far, and looks to finish very strong as well. There are still two undefeated teams in the league and every team has won at least 1 game. Some teams and players have really out done what they were predicted to do this season. Here is a look at five surprises of the season thus far.

number1  Denver Broncos - The Broncos were undefeated until the 8th week of the season. Most “experts” had them being near the bottom of the AFC. Their defense was supposed to be a mess and losing Jay Cutler was supposed to really sting. Well, the Broncos said shove it to all naysayers so far this season and are sitting at 6-1 going into tonight’s romp with the Steelers (where they could really make a statement by winning). Regardless of a win or loss, their record will still be surprising.

number2  Cedric Benson - When Benson was with the Bears, he was officially labeled a bust in the NFL. Now he is anything but a bust. With the Cincinnati Bengals he is second in the league in rushing with 837 yards rushing through 8 games, including 2 100 yard rushing games against the Ravens defense. I think the Bears made a mistake here.

number3  Miles Austin - Austin set a Dallas Cowboys franchise record with 250 receiving yards against the Kansas City Chiefs, since then he has done nothing but impress. He has become one of Tony Romo’s favorite targets in the year that was supposed to belong to Jason Witten and Roy Williams. If Austin can keep up his big time play, he will go from a nobody to a pro-bowler by the end of the year. While we are talking about it…….

number4  Dallas Cowboys - As a huge Dallas Cowboys fan, their season so far has not been a surprise to me, (I’m actually very disappointed in that loss to the Giants at home) but to the rest of the NFL it is somewhat of a surprise. Everybody expected the Eagles and the Giants to run away and fight for the division crown. Now, the Cowboys are sitting on top of the NFC East alone, and it couldn’t be sweeter.

number5  Jim Zorn’s Job- I am totally surprised that Washington Redskins’ head coach Jim Zorn still has a job. I figured by now that Dan Snyder would have kicked him to the curb. I think Zorn can be a good coach in the NFL, just not a head coach. The Redskins had a chance to jump off to a really great start by facing 6 straight winless teams, but only went 2-4 in that span and loss to the Lions and Chiefs! Zorn surprisingly was not fired, they now sit at 2-6 and have the Broncos and Cowboys waiting next, hello 2-8!
