Five Steps to Teaching Your Dog to Sit

porthos_03One of the first things you should teach your dog is the trick on how to sit.  You will find this extremely useful because getting your dog to settle down will be a priority throughout your puppy’s life.

1. Stand in front of your dog.

2. Hold a treat in front of the dog’s nose between your thumb and middle finger with your index finger pointing straight up in the air.  Do not let your dog get the treat.  Keep it just out of his/her reach.

3. Slowly move the treat over the dog’s head towards the tail.  At the same time, say the dog’s name and “sit”.  For example: Spot, sit.  Do not put the treat too far over the dog’s head.

4. Your dog should then go into a sitting position.  Praise the dog!  Say “Good [Name of dog]” And reward the dog with the treat.  Make sure you release them from this sitting position by saying, “OK”.

5. Repeat this with a new treat over and over.  Your dog should learn this quickly and you can start removing the treats.  Before you know it, you can get your dog to sit just by saying its name, “SIT” and pointing a finger straight up.
