Five Female British Singers Who Have Had Success in the U.S.
The British have found their fair share of success in the music industry here in the states, just ask Elton John. However, for a while the British music fad here in America seemed to die out. Well, the British accent is back in America's sound waves and the British women musicians who are insanely popular in England are the reason why. Here are five of the most popular British singers here in America.
I put Leona Lewis first because she is the most talented. Her voice is the best, at least to me. Lewis was born in 1985 in London, England. Singles such as "Bleeding Love", "A Moment Like This", and "Better in Time" have vaulted her to the top of the charts multiple times across the world. She has been nominated for a Grammy three different times, but has yet to win. She has however won a total of 25 different awards ranging from MTV Music Awards to Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards. Lewis was also named PETA's sexiest vegetarian in 2008 and 2009.Unlike a lot of her fellow British singers, she has yet to be a huge basket case in the news. The only drama she has really been involved in was in October of 2009 when she was punched in the head by a psychopath at an autograph session.
*Disclaimer* Just because I felt like doing this post, I am in no way, shape, or form a fan of Amy Winehouse. Okay, had to say it. Winehouse has had the most success out of the women on this list, but she has also had the most negative publicity. Born in 1983 in London, England, Winehouse's career has been a roller coaster. She first became popular in the U.S. when her song "Rehab" hit the airwaves. She was an instant superstar and with the fame came drama. She rode the success of "Rehab" all the way to 5 Grammy Awards. Her career looked very promising but then the drug abuse started kicking in. She needed to go to "Rehab" and stop saying "No, No, No!" HA! Since her success, she has been a tabloid target and has had numerous legal incidents. She has even had some serious health issues. If Winehouse can get her head together, she could be one of the biggest stars on the planet, but she would rather be out of her mind on drugs. It's a shame.
Born in 1985 in London England, this very outspoken and very controversial British singer is a tabloid and gossip magazine sensation. She has constantly been in the news for starting word wars with other celebrities. She has since sort of changed her image in that regard by saying that it was her own confidence that made her talk bad about celebrities. As far as music goes, Allen is an international superstar and has the awards to prove it. She has been nominated for a Grammy, and has won various awards from all over the world. Her single "Smile" really put her on the map with people in the U.S. and I think it was her constant tabloid drama that has kept her on the map (not trying to take away from her talent).
Technically, Duffy is a Welsh singer but her British label makes her a British singer for my list. Duffy was born in Wales in 1984. She is the first Welsh woman in 25 years to have had a #1 single on the UK Singles Chart. Duffy's debut album Rockferry has sold over 6 million copies worldwide and earned her the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2009. Her hit song "Mercy" won over U.S. fans and "Warwick Avenue" kept them coming back for more. Duffy is one of the newer successes out of England and shows no signs of slowing down. Her only negative publicity came when she got into an altercation with Sex Pistols front-man John Lydon. It was a he said she said ordeal that Duffy ended up blaming on herself.
Mathangi Arulpragasam (M.I.A.) was born in July of 1975 in London, England. Even though she is of Sri Lankan decent, she is a British musician. M.I.A. covers a variety of genres of music including hip-hop, pop, alternative, and electronic dance. Her breakthrough here in America was with the hugely popular single "Paper Planes". M.I. A. has been nominated for a ton of awards including a couple Grammy Awards and an Academy award. M.I.A. is widely known as very influential artist because of her influence over different genres. In 2009, Time Magazine put her on the list of the "World's100 Most Influential People". She is known for using her music as a loud political voice.
