Well…once again, it’s time for the kids to go back to school. I’m at home with my kids during the day, and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to a little break and some Alan time, but I’m also a little sad to see them go back. There is a major drawback to the back to school season, the expense of all the back to school supplies. Back when I was in school, we had to have a Trapper-keeper, pencils, crayons and some glue. Lately, the supplies list has been growing year after year. I have 3 kids and last year my wife spent roughly $60 per kid just on supplies, plus a new backpack for each one. Then, you can factor in new school clothes. I don’t even want to know how much was spent last year.
This year we did our research first. We looked online at all the sales and promos and we went through all the newspaper ads and store circulars. Here’s a list of the 5 best places I’ve found to get great deals on back to school supplies and clothing:
Walmart- Either online or in-store, Walmart usually has the best sales on all back-to-school supplies. If you’re buying online, take advantage of Walmart’s free site-to-store shipping. You can also request your child’s teacher to create an online supplies list. If the teacher is willing to do this, all you have to do is get on walmart.com, find your child’s school and teacher, and buy the supplies that are required by the teacher.
Target – Either online or in-store, Target offers great deals on back to school supplies and clothing. Target is currently offering free shipping on purchases over $50. They have great deals on backpacks, they start at $9.99.
Kohl’s - Kohl’s offers great deals on back to school clothing and accessories. They always have great sales and you can usually find 15% coupons in their circular.
Ebay.com- You can save a ton of money buying used. Back to school clothes can be very expensive. You can get name brand clothing either gently used or “new without tags” at great prices. The nice thing is, nobody knows that you’re buying used clothing. You can also save a lot of money buying their backpacks, calculators and other supplies and accessories used through Ebay. As long as you pay attention to the seller’s feedback and feedback rating, you can pretty much rest assured you’re not going to get screwed on the purchase. As a matter of fact, I actually bought a car through Ebay. It was the best auto purchase I ever made. No pushy salesmen and I paid what I wanted to pay.
I do buy my kids new clothes, but I also buy a lot of their clothes and shoes through Ebay. My wife and I also sell the clothes, shoes and other accessories they no longer use or wear. Selling last years stuff helps us pay for this years back to school supplies and necessities. If you do not have an Ebay account, click here to sign up now.
Amazon.com – Great place to buy calculators and other electronics, books, backpacks and other accessories.
