Five Books That Might Be Future Classics

Future ClassicsYou may find this hard to believe, but I love to read.  I often find myself looking at a book and wondering if it will later be a classic.  I decided to come up with a list of the ones that may be comparable to the “Three Musketeers“, “A Tale of Two Cities” or “The Call of the Wild“.  While the way your grandkids read them may be different, hopefully, they will just be reading!  You might be surprised to hear that the uber-popular ones like “Twilight” (which I absolutely abhor) and “Harry Potter” won’t be on this list.  Sorry fans, but I just don’t think they will make it in centuries to come.  While they may be remembered as great selling books, I compare them to another best-seller – “Ossian”.  This was THE BOOK of the 1700s.  Everybody owned a copy.  Ever heard of it?  I didn’t think so… Here are my five choices for your future classics. Five Best Banned Superbowl XLV Commercials

Last year, we brought you the top commercials banned from the 2010 Superbowl XLIV.  This year, the ad makers are back on their game with pushing the envelope too far.  A couple of these are definitely not for children.  It amazes me that we made such a big deal out of the Janet Jackson “costume malfunction” in 2004 and only seven years later, companies think they could get this through the censors.  Well, maybe they didn’t and wanted the publicity of having their commercial banned to begin with.  In any case, here are five of the strangest and most disturbing commercials proposed for 2011. Five Novels That Have Been Banned From The Bookshelves

The Adventures of Huckleberry FinnIf you haven’t heard the news, Mark Twain has been censored.  Auburn University Montgomery professor, Alan Gribben, has “sivilized” Twain.  He has removed the “N word” out of one of Twain’s novels (which appears a total of 219 times) and has replaced it with the word “slave”.  According to Gribben, it helps to make the book less “injurious” and “hurtful”.  Not how Twain wrote it, but more politically correct.  This isn’t the first time this has happened.  With the recent controversy of Mark Twain’s classic novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” being reprinted and censored, here is a list of other books that have been removed from Library shelves due to unsuitable words that may bother some readers.  Some of them are rather ironic when it comes to the banning of books! Will Black Friday Be Your Day Of Shopping?

Black FridayBlack Friday is coming!  It’s the day known as “the busiest shopping day of the year”.  It’s the day when every retail store seems to roll out the red carpet, open their doors at 5:00am (or earlier) and pray for the long lines of shoppers.  You can get crazy-deals on Black Friday.  I have friends claiming to buy laptops for a $100, flatscreen televisions for $200, and every toy imaginable for a song and a dance.  Before most people are even awake, “the shoppers” invade the Walmarts, Targets, and Best Buys of the nation.  Will you be one of them?  Does anyone really know why Black Friday is so important to the American shopping connoisseur?   Here’s a quick quiz for you to discover the source of this insanity – and if you’re out shopping that day, could you pick me up a Snuggie for my mom?

Five Best Toys For Christmas 2010

Hot Toys For 2010Growing up, one of the holiday traditions in my family at Thanksgiving was to open up the catalogs after the dishes were cleared and to create gift lists of what we wanted that year.  Looking back on it, this tradition was probably a way keep all of the kids occupied while the grown ups talked or watched football.  Had we had the internet back then (sorry, I know this dates myself), it might have been a little easier on my family.  However, it also might have been a costlier Christmas!  Still, parents are never in “the know” when it comes to what is hot.  If only there was some sort of list parents can turn to.  Well, here is a list of the top five toys the kids want this year.  Add them to your list!
