Five Animals That Used To Be Myths
Posted by Jimm in Pets and Animals on August 20th, 2010
It is hard to imagine that we often take certain animals for granted today, when just a century ago, they were considered mythical creatures. The animals we see in our zoos were once considered the stuff of storybooks by our ancestors. It is because of this, that creatures such as the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot might actually hold some credibility because we just don’t know if they really exist. If you fall into the camp that says, “You’ve got to be kidding! There is no such thing as a Bigfoot!” Take a look at these other creatures that people once scoffed at as a figment of an overactive imagination. Full Story »

Five Reasons Cats Are Fun
Posted by Jimm Fowler in Pets and Animals on April 1st, 2010
A cat makes life fun. I never thought I would like cats. Growing up, we never really had animals around the house – other than fish, which I tried my best to kill when I was about three years old (long story, but suffice to say it turned out bad for all involved). When I got married, I talked my wife into getting a dog, Porthos, who’ve I’ve written about before. However, my wife, who is a cat lover, talked me into getting two cats from the animal shelter only a few months later. I would never have believed it, but cats really have made life fun. So much so, we adopted a third, just last year. Here’s why… Full Story »

Posted by Jimm Fowler in Pets and Animals on March 6th, 2010
My dog, Porthos, loves to swallow things he shouldn’t eat. This has led us to the vet’s emergency room on several occasions. While we love our dog, it has taken him some time to learn what he should eat and what he shouldn’t. Just tonight, he consumed a pound of flour that was “safely” placed in our lazy susan.
What are the strangest things your pet has ever eaten?
Here are five things that dog’s have had to have surgically removed from their intestinal tracts. See if any of these are on your vet bill! Full Story »
My Five Best Mixed Breed of Dogs
Posted by Dennis Howell in Pets and Animals on February 23rd, 2010

My Dog Jaxson (Lab Retriever Mix)
All my life, I have only owned one full bred dog, she was a German Shepherd named Showshe (weird name that my mom picked out). She was a great dog but since then I have only owned mixed breeds. I have found that mixed breeds can be just as good, and in some cases better than a full bred dog. Unless you are trying to make money by breeding, don’t worry so much about getting a full bred of whatever type of dog you want. Of all the dogs that I have owned, here are my five favorite mixed bred dogs. Full Story »

When my wife and I decided to get pets, I never fathomed the excess hair that went along with our dog and cats. The animals are shedding machines. Every day seems to be shearing time on a sheep farm. It was love at first sight nine years ago when I first saw a team of Haflingers while at a Christmas tree farm searching for that perfect tree. The flaxen mane and tail, the quiet disposition, the work ethic caught my eye. Shortly thereafter I was in the market for a Haflinger that was trained to drive and to ride, and the rest is history. I’ve owned a Halinger gelding for 8 years now, and each year has been a treat as he continually surpises me with his intelligence, his curiosity and his kindness. Full Story »

Yesterday the Medina OHC sponsored an Obstacle ride in the beautiful Cuyahoga Valley National Forest. I volunteered to judge one of the obstacles, the giant red, white and blue horse eating ball. It struck me how hard our horses try in the face of perceived danger. After all, how many giant inflatable balls does one see in the forest? The horse’s instinct is to run from danger and we ask them to trust us and to reconsider what is dangerous. Today I had the good fortune to take a clinic from Jim McRitchie, Vice President for Mounted Police Training Systems, and I’d like to share some of what I learned. Full Story »

The sun set at 8PM tonight and soon it will time to “fall back” with our clocks and we in the north know what comes after that. There will still be plenty of opportunities to ride and to drive outside, but those days will be becoming shorter and cooler. This is a good time to prepare and to organize for the changes ahead.
