All About Dexter, Season 4, Episode 1

dexterDexter is back for a fourth season.  If you are unfamiliar with this Showtime series, it is one of the best on television.  During the day, Dexter (played by Michael C. Hall) is a blood splatter expert working in forensics with the Miami police department.  At night, his “darkness” shines through as he is one of the world’s most successful serial killers – preying on those who hurt innocent people.  While it has been on Showtime for three years, it is never too late to catch up with the show.  The series is based on the novels by Jeff Lindsay and has a humorous take on mass murder.  Here are five questions on the new season of Dexter.  NOTE: Spoilers below…

number1DEATHLY DADDY DEXTER
Dexter is a family man this season, married in the season finale with a child on the way.  The baby is keeping him up at night (as if murder was something that makes him relax) and he has been having times focusing on what is going on during the day.  This is seen when he accidently screws up in court by bringing the wrong notes to the trial.   Is being tired going to hurt Dexter’s career?  Already, Quinn is on his case for getting a murderer let go.  He’s going to be watching Dexter, just as Doakes was in Seasons One and Two.  Being a family man has put a serious crimp in Dexter’s lifestyle.  He’s not handling it well.  Where will this lead?

number2WHO’S DOING WHO?
A surprise this season was seeing the relationship between LaGuerta and Angel Batista.  It seems like Angel was just confiding in her that he almost got busted by an undercover cop disguised as a hooker (Gianna) and now we’re seeing him with LaGuerta.  This is the second affair LaGuerta’s had.  She doesn’t make many good decisions with her love life and the police force.  Two seasons ago, she was screwing around with her supervisor’s husband and now she’s doing Angel – her subordinate.  This can only end badly for Angel and I really like his character.

number3TRIADS AND TRIANGLES
Deb, newly appointed as a detective,  is still with Anton, which is a surprise because she always has some sort of drama going on in her life.  No sooner did I get that thought out when Keith Carradine, who plays her ex-boyfriend and FBI manhunter, Agent Frank Lundy, shows up on the scene.  He’s retired and trying to solve the one mystery that got away – the Triad Killer – who just happens to be in Miami.  No sooner does Deb lay eyes on him and she’s telling Anton a lie about having to go to a meeting.  Deb will never learn.

number4THIRD KILL FROM THE SUN
Speaking of the Triad Killer, this season’s show has deviated from the usual Dexter.  We know who the murderer is right off!  The Triad Killer, also known as Arthur Mitchell is being played by John Lithgow.  Typically portrayed in comedic roles (The World According To Garp, Harry and the Hendersons, and Third Rock from the Sun), Lithgow has already shown a strong bad guy persona by killing a girl and self-flagellating himself over a very hot shower.  I liked him as the bad guy in the Stallone classic, Cliffhanger, so it is good to see him wearing the black hat, so to speak.  The truly scary part is that Lithgow, soon to be 64 on October 19th, kills people in the buff.  I like the different angle with the killer, but where will it lead?

number5DEXTER CRASHES AND BURNS
Finally, Dexter makes his first kill of the season.  It takes him a couple of tries because he’s suffering from exhaustion with a crying baby, but he is straight back into the routine.  He captures the bad guy, trusses him up, tells him he’s going to kill him when….RINGGGG…his cell phone rings and it’s Rita.  The baby has an earache and needs medication from the pharmacy.  What’s a serial killer-dad supposed to do?  I saw this as a flaw in this episode.  It usually takes hours for Dexter to get done with a kill.  How can he finish up in no amount of time and get the medicine?  Finally, on the way home, he seriously wrecks his car with a chopped up body in the trunk.  Will this be the end of Dexter right from the first show?  Episode 2 will only tell…

I absolutely love this show…I really enjoyed the books as well. I don’t like the Angel and La Guerta affair…I like both characters but this is going to badly and not help the show. I like Dexter confiding to the baby in this episode and I’m interested in how the baby is going to effect Dexter’s life…this isn’t in the books,
