5 Unique Foods For The Outdoor Grill

Vegetarian GrillEverybody I know loves to grill out each summer.  The smell of the charcoal or wood burning and smoking the food brings back some fond memories of when I was young.  However, I am now a vegetarian (since January 1, 2010) and finding foods to put on the grill can be difficult.  Sure, you can throw some vegetables on the fire or maybe a boca burger, but it just isn't the same when everyone else is eating chicken or hot dogs.  So, I started searching for new foods to eat that showed some ingenuity, yet were still easy to make.  Here's a list of five of those items.  I would never have thought to grill these, but they sure are tasty!

BBQ Pizza

PIZZA ON THE GRILL

This is a favorite of a friend of ours. Each year he ties his birthday in with a giant BBQ pizza get-together. He makes all sorts of pizzas which can be cooked directly on the grill or with a pizza stone. The key is to oil the bottom of the pizza shell so you can get a good grab at it without spilling the ingredients. The result is awesome!

BBQ Bread

BARBEQUED BREAD

There's nothing like fresh bread, but sitting in a hot kitchen can be unbearable. So, the grill it was! This takes a bit of getting used to, but you can make some very good bread on your grill. The key is to keep the bread directly off the flames and use a covered grill to cook it evenly on all times. The best plan is to use a cooking stone and put the bread on a grill shelf. Make bread the way you would normally in your own oven.

BBQ Cake

Grilled Cake

If you can bake bread, why not cake? Grease and flour the pans very well before putting your cake mix in the pans. We've tried a variety of different options with this and have been able to make a very edible pineapple upside down cake. Make sure you watch the cake carefully. No one likes to cry over burnt cake.

Grilled Fruit

Grilled Fruit

I never would have thought about this. You can use all types of apples, pears, nectarines, apricots and plums on the grill. Cut them in half and take out the pit or core the apple, but then you can put them right on the grill! The sugar in the fruit makes a wonderful glaze. Brush the fruit with olive oil before putting them on your BBQ, then put them on the heat for about one minute on each side. Transfer to a plate and add a fruit marinade!

Grilled Watermelon

GRILLED WATERMELON

OK, who would have thought of putting watermelon on the grill? You want to keep the slices about one and a half inches thick. Sprinkle a little sea salt onto each side and drain for about a half hour. Rinse with water and then dry with paper towels. Oil both sides with olive oil and put on the grill. About two and a half minutes for each side should be good. Remove when they have grill marks on both sides. Sprinkle again with sea salt and ground black pepper to taste. Mmmmmm....
